That advice is a bit strange to understand looking at the AIS targets on the part of the AR canal from Niewegein to Wijk bij Duurstede . See picture. Is quite quiet and also the shortest route from Roermond via Meuse and furtheron. But better take the route via the Rhine and short part of the Waal and just after Nijmegen the Maas-waal kanaal to the Maas ( Meuse) . Much less traffic and only a short track with no strong current on the nose at the Waal.
At normal levels the Rhine has only very little current.

Not sure if I understood it currently, based on what mentioned above... The trip is from Roermond to Markermeer... so I'll take the Meuse, all the way up to Nijmegen, then take the Wall until the ARK with he possibility (or not) of going via the Vecht.

I will be going with the current until the ARK. From that point on, the current will be against.

Thanks

The reason I mention the route from Nijmegen upstream to the Rhine and via Arnhem to Wijk bij Duurstede is that you will avoid a very busy part of not only the waal but also the ARK as you can see on e.g.Marinetrafic www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/h...centery:51.8/zoom:10
The Rhine from the connection wit the Waa to Wijk bij Duurstede is much less traffic.
But indeed , its also a bit longer .
The idea to go via the Ijssel is also very interesting and also much faster than the way via the Vecht ,because of the quite strong current on the Ijssel( 2-3 knots in average )and , without any bridge you have to wait if the mast is down.
Took the Ijssel lots of times during summer holyday when I lived in Arnhem with my boat moored nearby.
And also much less traffic than on Waal and ARK until Utrecht.

... It was December on a Saterday evening. We decided to motor on further on the ARK to Amsterdam keeping starboard as much as possible and that worked out fine.

Good to know Palomine thanks. Is there any current on the ARK??

To my opinion the suggestion of Palomine is the most fast and easy route.
Some moments a little bumpy because of passing ship.

Upstream from Maas-Waal canal over the Waal to the Rijn to Arnhem is a "No Go" with a speed of only 4 knots through the water. Over this part of the Waal also more intens trafic than over ARK.

From Weurt to the Pannerden kanaal is 15 km stretch. In my younger days I
sailed a "Draak" (Dragon) sailboat on the river Waal with a 6HP outboard
without problems.
The river Waal isn't always a strong current river. You just have to look
up the dailey strength of the flow. ( I'll post that link later).

The choice between a trip of over 60 Km between steel walls or a 15 Km
stretch on a big river ?????

Indeed the urrent on the waal is strong , most of the time about 6 kmh .
However , because the part 15km upstream Weurt also has several 90 degrees or more bends that direct the strong current to the outer part of the bend. Therefore changing shores ( take care of the fast going traffic!) can give a big benefit because that way the average current can go down to only 3 kmh or even less , depending on how close you go to the shore . But always keep outside the red buoys when taking the port side upstream otherwise you make an offence which can be costly. Its somtimes quite narrow ( about minimum 25 meters) but possible .

I know the Waal and ARK a bit, and recommend to avoid them on slow small (sail)boats with little engine power. Water can be very rough, and big/fast freighters passing. Dangerous place.
