Mijn vorige boot “SENTA” in Reykjavik langszij de “SeaBreeze” van klimmer en zeiler
Bill Tilman
Een fragment uit Tilman's 'Ice with Everything' :
"Bob had an introduction to an Icelandic woman, a journalist, who very kindly asked the whole lot of us to her house for what proved to be a memorable meal, memorable at least as regards the solids. The sweet came first, an old Icelandic custom, and since it consisted of yoghourt and strawberries we had no grounds for complaint. Except, perhaps on the score of size, for having travelled through real yoghourt country in Central Asia where a normal portion is a washbasinful I found the small bowls a little meagre. After this promising opening we had salmon caught in a local river, so good that the accompanying vegetables and other trimmings hardly mattered. Unfortunately, this highly civilised meal had to be washed down with non-alcoholic beer, and there was no escaping this even on a plea of teetotalism.
In our turn we entertained a Dutchman, Dr. Hartoog, who turned up one morning sailing single-handed in an aluminium-alloy 8 tonner to moor alongside us. He was not a single-hander by choice. He usually sailed with his wife, a combination that can and has resulted in famous and formidable crews, such as the Smeetons, the Hiscocks, and the late Dr. and Mrs. Pye. On this occasion he had unwisely declared his intention to reach Greenland to which his wife had responded with ‘Include me out’ or the Dutch equivalent. The doctor had not enjoyed his lone voyage and on meeting contrary winds had put into Reykjavik prior to returning to Scotland where his wife was waiting. He may have been pining for his wife’s cooking and I doubt if our curry and duff would abate this longing."
