Subject: Travel by sailboat with a dog
Dear Madam, Sir,
Could you please help me with the following.
We intend to travel this summer to the UK with our dog by regular ferry (‘approved route & transport’). By then, our dog will comply with all rules and regulations, like vaccinations etc. Once we are in the UK, we intend to hire a sailboat and travel with our dog along the coast of the UK from harbour to harbour. We do not leave UK territorial waters with the sailing boat. Of course we will keep a log book and preserve the receipts of the harbours we visit, in order to be able to prove we do not leave UK waters.
My question is: Is a sailing trip this way, with a dog on board, allowed for us within the British law? If not, is there any way we can legally take our dog with us on such a sailing trip? And if it is allowed, are there any other precautions but mentioned above to prevent us to get into any trouble with regard to the dog while we are under way?
Kind regards,
Timo ******

Dear Sir/Madam
Thank you for your e-mail received on the 11th March 2013.
I can confirm that provided your pet dog is fully compliant for UK entry under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) and enters the UK using an authorised carrier on an approved route, it will then be acceptable for the dog to join you on a boat travelling to different ports around the UK.
However, please be aware that at any time when entering different ports on your boat, you could be asked to produce evidence of your pet dog’s compliance with PETS to the port authorities, I would therefore, recommend carrying the ticket purchased for your dog’s journey into the UK with the Pet Passport, and keep a log of the ports visited, as evidence that your dog legally entered and remained within the UK.
Please see the web-link below for details of preparation for pets entering the UK from an EU country or non EU listed country:

Owners are responsible for ensuring their pets dogs are fully compliant for entry to the UK. You may find the checklist in the leaflet at the following link useful -
