Storage for 2 or 3 boats...where should I look? 13 mrt 2018 09:23 #925495

Hello everyone,

Apologies for (once again) writing in English here.
Due to work reasons, I will be relocating to the border of your beautiful country (border with Belgium).

I will (of course :) ) bring my boats with me, but where to put them is proving to be a major issue.
So far they have been on a property with fairly low costs, but since I will be moving into an apartment, I will have nowhere to put them, so I ask for your assistance on "how" to search for such a place.

The boats are small and sit on their trailers...but they are 2 and now I was thinking of restoring an Optimist for my daughter, so possibly 3 boats! One is a Dehler Varianta 6.5m x 2.1m, the other one is a Centaur (open) which although it doesen't look that big... it also has 6m. The Optimist will fit inside any of the others, but I would like to be able to work on it, so some space is needed as well.

Can any of you assist with providing some website where I can find an affordable (potential) storage place? I was thinking of trying to rent out a space with some local farmer or even an old shed, or do you advise something else? The only websites I can find are for housing or for big warehouses.
Money IS of course an obstacle, so a commercial property only for myself is completely out of the question, but I do not mind if it's close or far away, I just need a place to put them.
Hey... if one of you wants to rent out a piece of land on your property that would be even better! I don't even mind if it's not covered, as long as it's relatively safe.

Thanking you in advance,
Filipe.

I personally would start by inquiring at farmers.

Hi SSL,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yep... Probably the best approach is to ask around locally, but it will be very time consuming, so I was hoping someone had been in a similar situation here and could advise or knows someone that could potentially be interested in renting out unused space.

If not, that´s what I will have to do.

Thanks again.

how about a "verenigingshaven"?

Hi LittleWings,

I wouldn´t know what that is...

The translator tells me it´s some form of "associated port" (?). Can you tell me how does it work? Or if you can name a few I can investigate!

Thanks!

do you need "parking space" for the boots on the trailer or just the trailor and the boats in the water?

Hi DavidS,

Only one of the boats will be in the water during the season, but that trailer and the other boat (also with the trailer) will need to be stored somewhere... preferably somewhere where I can do some work (but no electricity needed at all)

Thanks.

Felipe, I would suggest looking on the internet for " caravanstalling" means storage for caravans or mobile homes. The Yellow Pages could als be of some help. " Verenigingshaven" means sailing or boating club. Mostly you must become a member of those club.

Thanks FriendlySailor,

Then that´s a "no-go" for me... I made a quick search and so far what you said it has been confirming itself... not cheap at all.

I guess I will have to ask locally.

Can you guys tell me if the "farm option" is frequently used in The Netherlands? Are farmers generally open to this approach, or is not usually heard of? Over here, if a farmer finds he can get an extra income out of a non-used space, he´ll definitely allow it.

Thanks again.

Excuse me?

The entrance fee in our harbour ( a Vereniging) is € 70 and the membership is €45 a year.....

Not in Zeeland so not good for TS but to give an idea about costs....

Bij ons gewoon € 1250,- is toch duur of niet?
daarentegen het liggeld erg vriendelijk voor een heel jaar ong. € 600

In our port € 1250, - is expensive or not?
on the other hand the mooring fee is very friendly for an entire year approx. € 600

Hi Anjo,

And where is your Vereniging? Where can I know more about it and the running costs, rules and regulations, etc?
Does it have vacancies?

Thank you.

My issue is having 2 boats (I know, I know... that´s what my wife tells me  )
Do the "Vereniging" charge double or usually some kind of "in between" arrangement is made?

From what I was able to see in the internet, those caravan/boat storage places charge (from) 20€/m2 to much higher numbers... that will be at least 29m2 for me, but will be stuck in between caravans, packed like sardines... not an option I would favor most.

My preference would in fact be either a place where other boats (and their owners) hang around, exchange some ideas and the occasional beer B) or the solo farmer shed, where I can do some work during the odd weekend.

Do you only want to store the boat for a predefined period? Or do you want to be able to launch it directly using a ramp or crane?

For storing, there are commercial parties which offer (covered/roof or not) room for boats, cars, campers, caravans etc. Keyword to search; opslag, stalling, caravanstalling. Trailers are called 'aanhanger'/'aanhangwagen' in Dutch.
There are also lots of farmers, or other owners of large and empty real estate which are happy to rent you a place at usually lower costs. Unfortunately, these won't advertise this on websites or whatever. You could try marktplaats.nl The best chances are asking your locals; future employer, landlord, friends, small note in the supermarket etc. If you state the location a bit more specific, probably some people from here can point you in a certain direction.

You are usually not allowed to leave trailers in public (parking) space, but that is decided on at a municipal level. In my case/municipalitiy you are not allowed to leave them unattended longer than 3 days. Still, I asked for an exception which was granted because it was not obstructing the view and I let it stay for over threee months.

About our ports. We have more or less three types: commercial, municipal and associations('vereniging'). Commercial ones being the most expensive, associations the cheapest. Actually in an association you are expected to cntribute by doing some minor jobs within the harbour, in a commercial one everything will be arranged for you (at cost). Municipal are somewhat in between, probably more on the side of the commercial ones. I'm sure other people will be explaining the difference between the three. ;)
Some harbours also offer 'winterstalling', sometimes indoor and heated, usually just outside. You should check if harbours offer such facility and at what costs, including membership. You can also ask maritime maintenance companies ('werf', 'jachtwerf') for storage space, probably at high costs but you could be lucky during summer(?).

Still the first wuestion is the most important, do you still want to sail with them regularly?

Hi Pimpel,

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation!
Yes, I do intend to sail frequently and that is the reason they are both on trailers, although I could easily be comfortable with the idea of leaving the Dehler in the water until October and paying extra for that, of course. The Centaur is the boat I love to day-sail alone, but being on a trailer is relatively easy to manage.

I do not mind at all to help out with some work in some association. In fact it would be great, so I can meet more people (here in Czech Republic, as you can imagine, sailing is not a very widespread thing ;) )

I will definitely look into that in detail.

I will be very close to Terneuzen, but I do not mind making some Km´s!

If you can get into a "verenigingshaven", i definitely recommend it. Much cheaper usually, and the company will be good. Also, if you're lucky, they will have a rack for smaller boats such as optimists.

For your trailers (and the boats in winter) a nearby farmer will probably be the cheapest / easiest, but you may have to get to know one. Ask around near your new house, there's bound to be someone with connections.
