Onderwerp: Reinstall the pivot on the toerail

Reinstall the pivot on the toerail 16 dec 2019 08:46 #1109661

Dear 'Zeilers', ;)

on my ETAP 30, I have to reinstall again the pivot on the toerail (A).

My question is: after removing the tablet B, should it possible to reach the base of the

pivot A by passing through under the deck?

Thank you.
Regards.
LS

Sorry I'm not speaking dutch, I'm receiving some messages claiming no understanding of my post  ...simply I'm asking if I can install the Pivot:

on the side A:

passing under the seats B (after removing the wood tablet).

Thank you for your answers. B)

Can't you just access it through the berth in the cabin?
And how did it come off in the first place..?

(don't have an Etap, so cannot answer your question if the volume under B is in open relation with A. What is the function of 'B', closed from all sides?)

Thank you WillemB for your answer!

I've already had a look into the cabin under the deck, but unfortunately the roof of the berth is covered by plastic and only with a drill it is possible to reach the base of the pivot, otherwise I should disassemble an half of my boat.

I also don't know if the volume under B is open, that's why I'm asking you Dutch Sailors :)
The function of B wood tablet is only to support and hooking the autopilot.

You can try to make an mountconstruction from the outside. For an autopilot it is strong enough ween you make an sandwich construction.

My thoughts: it is possible that the foot rail has been mounted by Etap before the deck and the hull with inner shell have been joined together. In that case, easy access to the bolts is no longer possible. What you can do is to drill a hole in the inner shell from the inside, big enough for a socket wrench. After mounting you can close the hole with a plastic cap such as this one:

Thank you IlCigno and yes, currently, your solution is the only possible (drilling from the inside)...let's take another bit of time to check if some ETAP 30 owners had already experienced that problem.
Thank you again

Hi Little Sail,

We have an Etap 30 and solved this problem in the way described by ilCigno. We have removed and/or replaced some of the stanchion and toerail mounts because they were corroded or they leaked.

You can reach the toerail/stanchion mounts by making one or more large holes in the roof of the quarter berth and possibly removing some of the foam. The volume above the roof of the berth is mostly open. We have closed the holes with two neat inspection hatches (screw-on type).

We have taken the opportunity to also mount some low profile overhead lights in the quarter berth :) You can easily wire them up to the electrics panel from the roof of the quarter berth.

Also do not forget to use some Duralac paste (or similar) to prevent electrolytic corrosion between the stainless steel bolts and the aluminium toerail/stanchion mount.

Good luck!

Thank you H20, I agree with the solution too...so are you confirming that for sure there is foam between the deck and the roof of the berth under the toerail pivot?

Thank you again.

I can't remember exactly (we did this about 8 years ago), but the space between the deck and the roof of the berth is empty, so no foam there and enough room to work. There may have been some foam on the inside of the hull near the toerail pivot but it would not have been much. I'll see if I can find some pictures.

Thanks to all my dutch friends, I've finally solved the problem.

I made a large hole in the roof of the quarter berth (fortunately no foam up the hole)

I did not use Duralac paste (or similar) but the threadlocker to prevent electrolytic corrosion and to mechanically fill the space between the stainless steel bolts and the aluminium toerail/stanchion mount.

And that's the final result!

Thank you again and good wind!
