hi!

Sorry for the lack of Dutch on my post, but I still haven't learn much of your language since my last post :-)

I'm planning to drive to NL in February and buy some 16m2, with trailer and a small engine. I'll fit my car with a tow-bar soon.

A few questions:

1) do I need something else than money and my ID to buy the boat?
2) do we (the seller and the buyer) need to do so some paperwork (register, etc?) or this type of boat does not require such things?
3) can I just change the plates on the trailer and put mines or some paperwork is needed?

I plan to bring the boat, trailer and engine to Austria or Slovakia...

Well, thanks a lot for any help! :-)
Happy new years!

Esteban

@kisero:

If you want to travel with your boat across borders in Europe, you will need a VAT (BTW) declaration on the boat to show VAT on the boat is payed or that it was build and sold before the time VAT was applicable on boats.

3) only if the trailer+boat has a max. weight of 750 kg and the ID-plate on the trailer says it's max. weight is 750 kg. If not, the trailer must have license plates and is registred on the sellers name. At least, that should be so.

If the trailer+boat are not heavier dan 750 kg but ID-plate of the trailer says the max. weight of the trailer can be more than 750 kg: simply remove the ID-plate. The trailer is then automatically a 'homemade' max. 750 kg trailer which doesn't need a license plate.

Note: in the Netherlands trailers with a max. weight of 750 always have the same licenseplate as the belonging car (but white plates, the car has yellow plates). This can be different in the other European countries, I think you'll have to follow the rules from your own country, and perhaps have to take the correct licenseplates from home when you leave.

As to the trailer, there i can't guide you, but much is explained in the previous messages.
As to the VAT declaration, such is only applicable if you leave the boundary of the EU and therafter reenter the EU, for example by sea.
As you intend to travel within this limits by land, i would not worry as such is regarded as free traffic of goods within the EU. A bill of sale, stating that the purchase price is including VAT is however recommended.

this coveres it.
For a secondhand boat or trailer no taxes are due.
Maybe in your country you need to pay tax (VAT), but that is already payed in NL. You can draft a purchase bill stating that you bought that specific boat (number? number trailer?) form mister... for the price ... including taxes. The selling person doesn't have to pay any tax but you have proof for the customs.
For the trailer: when you buy it, it fals under the rules of your country. So the trailer needs licenceplates from your country accourding to your own countries laws.

Good luck!

If the trailer has a total capacity of over 750 kg, it should have an own (yellow) licenseplate. If so there's also paperwork involved and you should register the trailer as exported. In that case you probably also need an export licenseplate (comes with the paperwork, valid for a few days)

Can anyone verify this?

I think the weight of a 16m2 is about 400-450kg, so you should be allright with a trailer of total capacity 750 kg (incl. the trailer itself)

Yep Wybeslot,
you're right. That is so for trailers that are dutch-licenced trailers: trailers in NL with a total capacity >750kg.
For the trailer for a 16m2, i don't think it will be a licenced trailer so the buyer can directly export it without any paperwork.
From the moment of purchase it becomes a trailer from a foreign person attached to a foreign car, so the trailer-rules from that foreign country apply.

When trailer is registered (own numberplate/ over 750 kg)

I just sold my motorbike/ leaner side car to a guy in germany. Export cast 40 euro and can be done at "grenswisselkantoor". You need to bring in thje plate and leave it there. If youy drive it home (which I suppose is the case) you need the bring in a temporary numberplate form GB.
Not very difficult...

Succes with your traditional dutch boat...(we go to England to buy a boat :) much more choice and much cheaper (talking about skiff sailing dinghies..))

Couldn't agree more.

I've done this the other way round, buying a second-hand Javelin in England. I just drove over, and towed the boat home. No questions asked.
A few german friends did the same with brand new boats, and again, no problems.

As far as the trailer goes; the remarks about seperate licensce for the trailer are right. Just check with the person that sells the boat if they use the cars number plates, or the trailer has its own.
In case of the latter, I'd ask the RDW (dutch RijksDienst voor Wegverkeer) for advice.

Good luck with your 'kwadraat'

Hello Esteban,

Maybe you already have all the answers you needed but as an owner of a 16m2 i can tell you that everybody I know who has a 16m2+trailer uses the plates of the car. Good luck with the trip and purchase of the boat!

Esteban, about "using the plates of the car": that is correct, but this are the Dutch rules. If you're towing the trailer with a car registred in an other country, you will have to follow the rules of the country where the car is registred. An example: all trailers in Germany have their own, seperate license plates.

Anyway, 16m2kameroad confirmed that the boat plus trailer have a max. weight of 750 kilograms together. I guess that the rules in most countries are a bit more easy for trailers < 750 kg then for trailers > 750.
