Onderwerp: Pre- purchase

Pre- purchase 09 sept 2020 19:59 #1204765

Good evening,

Do you think its worth to hire a company/ professional to do a Pre-purchase Survey of the sailing boat? Probably its very expensive as it also has to take it out of the water.

And im not talking about a big and expensive Yacht........ My doubt is when its a 28/29 feet, from the 1980s sailing boat, around 11-13k euros.

Thanks for your support,
Nicolas

Let’s say €200 for lifting the boat, and between €400 - 600 for the expert, depending on your wishes.

Hi Nicolas,

The answer regarding your question depends on your own knowledge and experience. If you're not sure how to survey, it will be the best first investment you can do. If the boat appears not worth the price or have a lots of repairs, then you better look further.

If the boat is okay, but needs some TLC, you'll get a report of his/her findings (and maybe an advice regarding the price you may offer the seller). All depends on what you agreed on with the surveyor.

Although it depends on what you like to survey, you'll be looking at less than 0.5% (in my case) of the purchase of the boat. Just inquire several surveyors for a quote and you'll be well informed on what they can offer.

Kind Regards, Hans

It is always wise to take a GRP boat out of the water for inspection of the onderwater hull parts.

This to check if the boat does not have Osmosis problems. Or former repairs of Osmosis problems.

It is better to buy one without these problems. A simple survey can easily be done. It is always good to have second independent view. You don't need moisture measurements etc.

It is always good to have a complete list of the inventory that comes with the boat.

Do you know any professional that I could connect with for the Pre-purchase valuation?

Wat is er uberhaupt zo problematisch aan osmose?

Is er ooit wel eens een boot door gezonken?

I would recommend mr. Olav Cox. He is an experienced surveyor and sponsor of this forum.

No need to go all the way, surveying a +/- 10k boat... if I remember correctly Olav also offers a 'quick-scan'. Will probably limit the costs to +/- 300,-, excluding lifting (which you should want to do anyway). Good luck!

Osmosis is only a problem when buying or selling a boat. Repairs are expensive though. So it is a serious negotiation point.

Other than that, it is cosmetic.

About your question:

Yes. If you need to ask the question: YES!

It is not cosmetic. The cause is in the material itself.

It is a problem originating from the construction and the used material during the building process.

The cause is simple. If the grp laminate contains soluble components then these can generate this blisters due to osmotic pressure when in contact with water. Separation of the glass fiber layers is also possible.

This can be remains of the curing process or the main cause the binder of the glass fibre reinforcement.

A boat does not sink from osmosis effect. But can weaken the construction.

Don't buy a boat with osmosis.

You cannot change the material.

Thanks to all for your input.

Its more expensive than I thought.......I have asked to 3 surveyors on the price of a Pre-Purchase Survey and for that type of boat goes from 680-850euros (plus transportation 75euros aprox). On top I have to pay 200e to take the boat out of the water.........

Thanks

Nicolas,

the boat has to taken out of the water and needs cleaning with a waterjet and back in the water after the inspection. Twice using the crane.

I think a simple first survey is no more then an hour work. You don't need a complete survey with a detailed written report. Simply an impression if the boat is in a good basic condtion and a valuation. That is what you need.

Regards,

Bram

There are two view points to a survey: safety and money.

A boat of any value can potentially sink or create accidents. When you cross oceans the safety issues are obviously more important then when sailing on a small pond. Either you yourself or a surveyor has to make an assessment if the boat is safe for the intended purpose.

Financially when the boat turns out to be a "lemon" it can become a money pit which is a risk you can take by not having a survey.

As mentioned above an extensive survey might be a little too much, but a simple "quick scan" to discover major issues if they would exist is in my opinion worth the money. In the first place for your safety.

Beste Nicolas,

Hey Nicolas,

Welcome to the forum.

Some small children speak dutch, and some people that speak dutch behave like small children.
Like small children that are makig a fuss, if you just ignore them they'll quiet down eventually.

I hope it works out with the boat.
