Hello,

Ik spreek niet so good nederlands, dus gaa verder op Engels.. :)

I am beginner, I did a few days sailing with skipper, and I already sailed on my own a fox 22 in Veerse Meer. I am planning to spend 1 week in Veerse Meer, but I would like to go out to Oosterschelde and surroundings. I wonder if somebody can give me some tips/advices etc. I am especially interested in:

* info about tides
* The little fox 22 does not have a VHF, so I also wonder what is the best radio to get information about weather forecast etc.
* Are the maps for OOsterschelde area freely available? (especially depth and berthing )

regards

Zagzig,

Tidal information can be found in tidetables. Most shipchandlers have a pocket size available for free.
Charts are, as far as I know not freely available, but can be bought in the same shipchandlers store, but I assume they will also be available at the yacht rental company.

Weatherforecast are best by VHF channel 25. Forecasts on the radio are usually not really suitable for sailing forecasts and are in dutch...
Perhaps you can find some friendly dutch skippers with a VHf to relay the forecast to you in port?

Oh, and don't forget to try to spot the porpoise's!

Enjoy and regards,

Thanks for the quick answers... I have already seen the popoises in Bruinesse... People did not believe me... :)

I do not have VHF, nor the licence yet. I wonder if it is worth to buy a VHF listener. Is it legal to have a VHF listener without VHF license in NL?

And and ... good luck NL the WE on w cup!!!

About tides... are them that dangerous? I mean suppose that I sail during the right periods, can it f.eg. Ooosterschelde be more dangerous than Veerse Meer for a beginner?

the tides are quite strong at the barrier of the Oosterschelde. So strong indeed that you can not outrun them. For the rest of the Oosterschelde, it will be a few knots maximally.

Tide-tables can be found (and printed) at www.filo.nl/zeilen/getijall.htm

Maps: I have Oosterschelde in bmp format (scanned myself).
It is the 2002 version but as far as I know nothing has changed there. Could email them to you if you want.

Which barrier you are reffering to: the link between Veerse meer and Oosterschelde, or link between Oosterschelde and the see. Well the little engine on the fox 22 can make I think 5 knots.

Well my dilema is if with this boat I could make safely a trip from Cortgene to Bruinisse (or further up), given that I would take the right times for the tides.

Thanks for the maps. Email address in private message (to avoid spam).

Having a VHF receiver on board is legal, but a VHF with the microphone taken off does not qualify as such, and might still get you in trouble. However, dedicated scanners / receivers are perfectly legal.

So is getting a license, by the way ;)

I have sailed the Oosterschelde many times with my 22 feet Trotter (with 4 hp outboard).

Even though it is just a small boat, with only little engine power I have never had any problems on the Oosterschelde.

All I did was avoid going too far west (to avoid the strong currents there)

Just sail sensible and you will be allright! And if you don;t trust on the fox going against the tide, just go towards one of the many beautifal banks and drop you anchor to wait 5-6 hours!

May you have fair winds and tides :)

Capolavoro: I see... Passing the lock and OOsterschelde should not be then that difficult. For details I will ask some skippers on place.

Crossing the Oosterschelde form the veersemeer lock to bruinisse shouldn't be a problem at all!

Just try to have the tide running with you for the last part!

Many years ago we always listened to a very good weatherforecast on the Single Side Band using a small portable radio. Don't know if that forecast is still issued.

I already applied for the license (in Belgium)... and will probably have it in time, but I will not be able to find a portable VHF for sure, so I maybe I will order a listener form amazon.co.uk... anybody does know any of these:

Thank you!!!! That is great to hear... The renting company really tried to discourage me... Honestly I do not have too much experience, but I think I have good practical skills. The first day in sailing I felt already "at home" when sailing the fox 22. I was a bit scared when wind caught up (5bf...) but I am confident that the boat would not capsize :)

anybody knows these two books?

And another challenging question:

I do not have any power supply on the boat... Just for fun and experience I was thinking about:

www.navitron.org.uk/product_de...p?proID=193&catID=69

... may seem bit crazy... but hm... attaching it to the mast would be probably dangerous for sailing (and cutting the sail...), but attaching some "non destructive" way to the stern?

Hmm, why do you need power? Can't you charge a battery with shorepower before you leave?

Well... it would be more for experiment... Me beginner, but with already lots of plans :)

Indeed I can charge the battery with shorepower but do not think it will keep running a laptop + coolbox for more than 1 day. I think the battery is 50AH... so I think the laptop eats 2A... I know... I should buy a new laptop, and forget about the cool box.. :)... But the wind turbine would give me in avarage 100 W at avarage 2 Bf....

Are you renting the Fox 22? In that case I'd say it is too much trouble to rig an wind turbine temporarily for just a few weeks, and I'd postpone that to when you have your own boat.

Do keep in mind that wind turbine ratings tend to be a bit optimistic...

yes.. that is true... it happened with a solar charger... I did not get 10% of what was on the paper... However from the 300W advertised, I expect at least 100 W is realistic, or?

Mayday Mayday... My sailing plan is in danger :) I ordered the two books ('Inland Waterways of the Netherlands' and 'Cruising Guide to the Netherlands') on Amazon in time, but I the affiliated shop decided to screw me up and not to send them in time (never had such problems before on Amazon). The two books would have been the vitamin for the trip, so no idea how to plan stuff now... I wonder if anybody in the Veerse Meer area would have any of this two books for sale, or to lend. (In case of lending it, I would pay of course a "security deposit" etc.)

Another solution would be to buy a dutch book about sailing on the inland waterways (trip planning, timings, etc.), but some of them may be difficult to read. Could anybody advice me some titles?

By the way... I obtained today the VHF operator license and received the listener "www.amazon.de/gp/product/B000NI4PWI/ref=oss_product" so I can listen to the forecast :)

Hi Zagzig,

Both books are available on bol.com for delivery within 3-4 working days, but I'm not sure if they're available in, or deliver to the UK. When are you going exactly?

When you're here, I would definitely try to get a copy of the ANWB Almanak, part 2, which has detailed information on all inland waterways, bridges, locks, marinas, including phone numbers, VHF channels, operating hours, available marina facilities, tides etc. It's in Dutch, unfortunately, but probably still very useful.

Regards,
Jeroen
