Onderwerp: Does anyone recognize this Dutch sailboat?

Does anyone recognize this Dutch sailboat? 20 jan 2011 23:37 #171921

This 6.4-6.5 meter keelboat, built in the Netherlands, was purchased in 1970 by my father in New Hampshire, USA. My father, brother and I restored it, named it Draak, and sailed it on Lake Winnipesaukee. From what I recall, the previous owner had worked for the US Government and was posted in NL, and shipped the boat home to the US at the end of his assignment.

The boat had a chined hull, planked construction, a fin keel with attached rudder, original cotton and newer dacron sails, bronze hardware and nice mahogany cabin and cockpit. The mast was stepped on the cabin top and could be lowered to pass under bridges.

My father sold it in the 1980s and the current whereabouts of the boat are unknown. I would be grateful for any information on the design, builder, etc.

Thank you,
Charlie Visser

To me it looks like a BMer (or 16 square) with subsequent built cabin. BMer is a very frequent type of open sailing boat in the Netherlands. Seen a different type of open boat (Valk) with afterwards build on sprayhood/cabin before.

I could be wrong, though, therefore confirmation from others would be worth waiting for.

Kind regards

It's definitly not a BM or 16kwadraat. Those ships are exactly 6 m long.
And the shape of the ship on the picture is different

Not a BM/16 sqare, they don't have a chined hull. I would say a Valk, also due to it's length, but then the rigging has been modified. Looks like ther is a backstay which doesn't combine easy with a gaff... ;)

It looks a bit like a small type of Beulakermeerkruiser:
This is a link to the site of the ownersclub

www.houtenhuismanboten.nl/koop.htm

Built by Royal huisman shipyards in the time the wharf was situated at the small town of The Ronduite in Holland. Nowadays they are located in Vollenhove and known for there mega-sailing yachts (Athena)

The stern of these boats however is different from your type. The boattype snekermeerkruiser has the same stern, but are in general a bit bigger then the boat on your picture.

It looks like a Juno van der Stadt. I have some Juno's and they are all slightly different, made of wood.

Here is one for sale: Juno for sale
and another

You can even rent them!

must be a Juno.

LOA 6,78m
LWL 5,45
Beam 2,00m
Draft 0,95m
sail area 18,4m2
Designed for amateur-building,
for inland waters incl het biggest in NL, the IJsselmeer

design: E.G.van de Stadt, 1951

van de Stadt was quite an innovative designer, experimenting with plywood (1940, first worldwide), with free-hanging rudders, with light-displacement sea-racers (like the 60-foot planing maxi, the Stormvogel, 1960, taking line honours in the Sydney-Hobart).
Also one of the first to use polyester in boatbuilding (the Pioneer, 1959).

The design bureau still exists (vd Stadt & Partners), and most active dutch boat designers learned how to design as apprentices with van de Stadt....

Your family name is very dutch, mr Visser ;-)

Many thanks. It looks like a Juno, indeed. Slight differences in the cabin from the examples given, but the hull shape and measurements are very close. This Juno in particular is very similar. The only obvious difference is the shape of the coaming.
