Onderwerp: Vollenhovense Bol in Canada

Vollenhovense Bol in Canada 30 aug 2012 17:06 #314921

Hello,

I have a Vollenhovense Bol and live in Canada (Bay Of Quinte, Ontario).

I was hoping I could find some people on this forum who could give me advice, instruction etc on this boat. As you can imagine, this boat is very different than the vast majority here.

Info on stuff such as sailing traits and skills, capabilities, tradition etc would be great.

The rigging was all off when I got it. I think I have put most of it back as required working off of old photos, but still have some questions.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi James, welcome on this forum.

Must be very special, a Vollenhovense Bol in Canada!
Just ask your questions, there is a lot of knowledge over here.

Combine your questions with pictures, that will help.

Hello James,

Is there a story to tell how the boat got to Canada?
I live in Halifax, NS myself...

cheers,
Erik

Welcome at the dutch sailorsforum.

A Vollenhovense bol in Canada, strange.
In Holland we have plenty flatbottoms, i think we invented it ;)
We are sailing a zeeschouw, also a flatbottom.
On this site you can find some drawings of the rigging.
Do you have photo's from your ship?

Thanks for the replies

She was built in 1981 by Jachtwerf Van Rijnsoever. The couple I bought her from purchased her in 1984 and had here shipped to the Toronto area. She became mine last fall.

I had been looking for a boat for a few years, and fell in love with her the moment I saw the ad.

She needs a bit of work to get her back in tip-top shape as she sat for a number of years due to her owner's illness.

I will attach a picture, hopefully it shows up.

One thing I couldn't really figure out was how the tack on the main sail is attached. I mean the corner of the main sail that attaches near where the boom and mast join.

A picture I have of the boat rigged seems to show a double block attached to the sail, and I am not sure after that.

Hi,

Welcome on our forum. Strange idea having a traditional dutch yacht in Canada, but if we can be of help, no worries.

The tack on a main like yours is not attached to the boom or mast, as maybe you would expect.
You put the man up to a point where your gaff is in the right position. The luff of the sail is then trimmed down to the right tension.
Usually there is a double block on the tack, and the line splits over the boom; 2 lines to starboard, 2 to port.
Maybe this picture makes some sense:

Edit: Someone beat me on this one ;)

Ah, yes, thanks!

I thought that wooden piece was held in place by two bolts, but if I used something with a loop on top, I could rig it as shown in the picture.

Again, thanks

How nice! Ask any question you want. We sail a 8.5m Vollenhovense Bol since 1979 from the same builder (built 1973).

One of the ideas behind not attaching the tack to the gooseneck is that the mainsail can be lifted when required.
Sometimes they use that for increasing the amount of windpressure in the jib:

These vessels are of a different type than yours, but the principle remains the same.

On sailing cargo vessels, the boom was sometimes raised to make enough clearance for the cargo as well.

When sailing downwind, some Dutch traditional boats will sail better when the tack is raised. You could experiment with it and see what works for you.

Also, the tackle at the tack is used to add or release luff tension. you will hoist the gaff high and than pull the tack down till you have the correct tension, just like a cunningham in a modern mainsail. This way you do not need as much force to get the right tension.

An English book usefull for me was: "Hand, Reef and Steer" by Tom Cunliffe.
The book is not covering the tradional Dutch designs but gives much information about many aspects of classic gaffers.

Beautiful!

I would love to see another in person, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Thanks, I already have that book, as well as the Gaff Rig Handbook. Now when I read them they are making more sense.

This is my first sailboat so I don't have much knowledge base to start from!

Question about sails:

I have a set of traditional reddish brown canvas sails and a set of modern ones.

What would the characteristics of canvas sails be versus modern ones?

Canvas is heavier, stretches out of control when it's wet and if you store it while it's wet, it will rot.

No wonder sailmakers are using polyester cloth..... ;)

There is an active club of owners of ship built by this shipyard:
www.schipperskring.nl/
for all classic boats built by "Van Rijnoever" or "Kooijman en de Vries"(its former name)and a few types of "De Scheepsbouwers".
