Onderwerp: Needing sailing experience for October

Available to crew. Hoping to get experience around or near Europe before November. I'm starting my trip from The Netherlands and will be making my way to either Canada or New Zealand. I so far have a position as crew for an Atlantic crossing, but I'm still needing to get sailing experience before hand. Ideally I'd love to get the opportunity to sail from NL down past belgium, France, Spain and onwards, but if your are sailing anywhere around there I'd greatly appreciate the opportunity to join you. I have lived in The Nederlands for 2 years and I understand some Dutch.

I'm an extremely hard worker, really like pushing myself, learn quick, not scared to use initiative, trust worthy, social and very easy to get a long with. I'm a good guy at heart, down to earth and genuine.

If your the kind to like it quiet, or like a good deep chat even, I can go both ways.


I'm 30, Male, hold a British passport. Have a degree in design engineering (sustainable route). I'm technically minded, but also embrace creativity. I cook, clean, don't mind getting my hands dirty, I'm also fit, no health problems and love to learn.

I'm willing to pay for my food, and offer to work hard and help out enormously in whatever way I can.

Best bet: get yourself a cheap plainticket to Portsmouth and sail from the Solent. Lots of opportunities there. Also make yourself more attractive (and I am not talking about your haircut) for skippers and go on a sailing course. Most skippers are not looking for dead weight but for help in sailing the boat (watches etc.). Good luck.

Cruisers forum is a good one. That's where I have an opportunity to sail from Majorca all the way to New Zealand. This is on the condition that get experience before hand, so I'm really hoping to get this. I'm in Sweden now, but will be in NL from October. I was thinking of looking online, but also travelling along the coast down past Belgium, France, Spain visiting all of the marinas and asking in person. Do you think that would be a good idea?

Bad idea. Waste of time and resources. That's why they invented the internet. Broaden your horizon. If you have the resources go on a sailing course. If you are broke you planned this badly People from all over the world come to the Solent (UK) or Newport (USA) if they want to be serieus about sailing. Lorient in France is also a good place but I suspect your French is below par. Search the internet, make yourself more attractive for skippers, go on a sailing course preferably on the Solent and ask around while you're there.

Your timing is a bit off, to be honest, as crossing the Bay of Biscay in this time of year can be less than fun

My bet is you'd have a much easier time finding a boat if you were looking to sail in Spring or Summer.

@Intotheblue, this is an excelent place to post your request. However, the holiday season is over for most people and the weather has not been very good lately, so you may have some trouble finding something. I'm confident that someone is interrested.

Budget is an issue, I need to hang on to my savings because at my final destination I'm going to need it to help me find work their and settle in. Plus, I also like the challenge. I once did a hitchhiking trip from Malaysia to The Netherlands. I arrived in Malaysia with 100 euros. People would have thought that was crazy, but I managed it.

So I was hoping to blend hitchhiking with sailing, starting in the Netherlands. If you were in my postion, and it didn't work out online and you had to travel to a marina which is roughly in the direction of Majorca, which marina woud you recommend?

I will take the tip and be looking more online and also make myself more attractive.

October is not a good time for sailing. The season will be on it's end. On the IJsselmeer there will only be a hand full of boats left. And people will almost be looking on the attic for their ice-skate's. By that time going south across the bay of Biscay with a small boat outright hazardous.

So Bay of Biscay is no no? Which marina should I head to then? Some where in Portugal, south Spain, south France or Italy?

Your approach is like a hitchhiker looking for the best spot on the Autobahn hoping for a quick ride. Sailing is not like that. So there is no "best marina" to hitchhike south.

I actually hitchhiked the Autobahn pretty well

Why can't it be done? I believe there is a better marina to go to, as chances will differ marina to marina. Attitude makes a big difference

Yachts entering the race are on route to Las Palmas. You could try to get a ride on one of them.
They move with time towards Las Palmas.
