Onderwerp: Suggestions For Boat Insurance In The Netherlands?

Suggestions For Boat Insurance In The Netherlands? 18 nov 2022 18:29 #1438745

Hello all,
Sorry for the English, I am working on my Dutch :)

So I bought a 34 year old sailboat with a value when purchased of say 15K Euros and value today after much work/investment of about 30K. She's in the water now so I must get insurance ASAP. And I'm wondering if anyone can provide suggestions?

Someone in marina said just get the cheapest package because with my very much not 'lux' boat they will resist paying out anyway. Then again if I sink her or do something unfortunate this boat is a lot of money to me and I want insurance to cover buying another boat.

I will be sailing a lot solo. And I want to eventually travel to England and Scandinavia and farther.
Hope that's enough info to get started. I have no idea what's normal here in The Netherlands where I live with my Dutch partner, and have the boat berthed.

Also I have lost my original survey, and have no proof that standing rigging was replaced 4 years ago. Don't know if any of this matters...

Any suggestions on insurance companies/packages, etc much appreciated.

Best Regards,
WS

First thanks very much for the suggestion.
I'll look into Kuipers.
Of course it's a bit difficult for me now as a Google search doesn't tell me who has a good reputation in The Netherlands (nor which companies to avoid!)

Just for reference I checked out ANWB and noticed the following options:
Brand/ontploffing/blikseminslag/storm
Diefstal
Vandalisme/vorst/eigen gebrek
3 jaar aanschafwaardegarantie
Geen aftrek nieuw voor oud

But I see no 'own fault' option. So is it normal if I sink the boat by say hitting a reef or something that I'm covered under the basis protection?

Also the boat is worth more now than when I bought it so is it normal that they pay current value if this is the case?

Finally I saw this one: "Let op! Solozeilen is niet verzekerd op zee."
I wonder is this normal? Since I'll be solo a lot I hope I don't need very special insurance? I have no idea what's normal here.

Normally you are covered for " own faults "
About solo sailing I couldnt find in my own insurance that it isnt covered, I sail often solo on sea.

Just give a few a call
I have kuipers
Previous Unigarant

Couldnt tell you if they are good, I never claimed anything the past 25years.

OK, well that is certainly good to know.

Well then I suppose (at least for me) ANWB is one to avoid.

OK, I'll do that. A few conversations are probably better than trying to figure this all out on web pages...

Hope to follow in those footsteps!

I am insured through DNA Yachtinsurance, an insurance broker, over 15 years.

Unfortunately, I have experienced “own fault” (eigen gebrek) damage of stupid nature, which has been covered and to which they supplied great support.
This support you may need after damage and claim.
Next to that they are inexpensive.

Value you choose yourself and needs to reflect day-value (if less you get less pay-out)
Region can be chosen yearly (inland, coastal (covid) or further)
Own fault included
No new for old discount (if old parts are broken (as always), new parts to be replaced; “geen nieuw voor oud aftrek”), so hassle free.

Liability insurance is compulsory as soon as you own the boat!

"Own fault" (eigen gebrek) has nothing to with the Owner. Eigen gebrek (inherent vice) is a material defect like a broken spanner, failing thruhull fitting, which causes loss of the rigging or sinking of the boat.

so in a few words all ( the good ànd the bad ) are shoved in the same corner ? I think there are enough solid and fair, transparent insurance companies with a trustworthy reputation. Who to avoid ?
Datacombinatie (or any company with relations or connected to Answar Idea ( ansvar-idea.nl ) Also; ask them who is (re)insuring the insurancecompany.

have fun!

Watersportverbond.nl (Dutch Association of Watersports) was lately advertising their insurance. They are connectid or sponsored by Allianz the big German insurance company.

OK, thanks for clarifying.
So then I think he was referring to something that actually was his fault and they covered it. So that's nice to know.

Yeah exactly! I thought his 'analysis' was perhaps a bit general. I imagine there are a handful of dodgy companies and the rest are pretty much decent. Sorting these out is of course the trick ;-)

Thanks for assisting with the filter.

"Schadevrije jaren"

I assume this means under insurance?
So I've sailed for several years off and on with rental boats, this is my first boat owned, and my first time owning insurance.

So I guess zero?

Can you proof this charter sailings ? And in what area's ?. And with what type of boats?

Insurance companies like to have insight in the experience of the new client and of course the type and maintenance and condition of the boat.

Boat insurance is not like car insurance !

Bram

No I don't keep receipts of rentals. They were small boats anyways.

I suppose I'll have to start with zero discount.

So I looked into DNA.
Not sure I understand the new for old concept.

"Aftrek nieuw voor oud van toepassing?"
Ja tenzij uw schip op basis van nieuwwaarde, vaste taxatie of vaste waarde is verzekerd, dan zal aftrek nieuw voor oud alleen worden toegepast voor schade aan buiskappen, (dek)zeilen en tuigage

So if my sails are damaged they only pay partial value? Everything else they pay full value. Or do I have that backwards.

Also I do not have a survey/valuation report.
So what do they pay out in the event of total loss?

Also I wonder if CASCO is worth it for an older ship?

With a fixed value policy they pay out the agreed value as stated in your policy. Otherwise with a totall loss you get the present value (dagwaarde) of the boat.

New for old is that with a partial damage they pay the new replacement value of the item. Without deductable. This is of course not on items like the engine and the sails.

If items are worn out then the claim is declined.

Do you need full cover insurance ? You can take a Third party Liability cover.

But then there is no cover for fire in the Marina or during winter lay-up. Wreck removal. Grounding etc. etc. And there must be a third party be found and liability be proofed.
