Registering a small boat - The foreigner again! 07 okt 2016 08:45 #773721

Hi everyone,

Again, I'm sorry for the "English" post.

As some of you might know from following the "Help the foreigner...UFO 6mt - Keel Removal" post, I have just bought an UFO in the Netherlands, although I live in Prague, Czech Republic.

All things regarding boats are overly complicated here, starting with a mandatory registry of the boat and all its contents with the Ministry of Transports! So all things considered, I was wondering if there is a way of registering it in the Netherlands?

I know that most (if not all) small boats do not have a registration, but is it possible to have one, if one would deliberately want to?

I know that it is possible to register it under (for example) www.dutchyachtregistration.com or www.yachtregistration.company and so on... but they charge a quite considerable amount of money, for a thing that is (probably) done with a lot less...
So I ask you for a bit of clarification on this, if you can.

If you would want to "register" your small sail dinghy, what would you need and where would you go? Is that something that you can do on your own?

Thanks a lot for any help or guidance,
Filipe

You can register your boat in The Netherlands at the Kadaster but it is quite expensive.
The websites you mentioned are scams.

If you want to register just to be able to proof your ownership, you could use http://www.watersporters.nl/icp

A google translate of this page:
ICP applications

The International Certificate Pleasure (ICP) is an unofficial title deed which performs well in practice. In most of Europe the CPI is accepted as an identity of the boat. This includes jet skis.
Boaters can apply at the Water Sports Association ICP.
NOTE You have to upload the following documents with your order:

Copy of a valid passport or identity card owner
Copy of ownership. This should clearly be the boat owner information and data.
That may be one of the following:
- Copy of the contract of sale;
- Registration Certificate RDW (both sides);
- Registration Land Registry;
- Insurance policy with proof of payment insurance.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies!

Unfortunately, boat registration is a mandatory thing here in Czech Republic and also "a grey world of bureaucracy"... not to mention physical inspections to the boat and contents, nor the various fees "attached".
So I was considering "honoring" my Dutch boat by keeping his Dutch origins and save myself quite a few headaches :D

La Mavare, I understand your comment based on the fact that the ICP registration is pretty straightforward and low cost... but not for a non-resident because I will need a legal representative. From what I was able to read (well... translate) that´s what these companies basically charge you for. For providing you with an address!

But if you categorized them as "scams" for any other reason (as like in actually being known for extorting cash and not fulfilling), please do let me know! My Dutch relies on the translator function and I might be missing something.

Thanks a lot!

Would (from a Czech perspective) an ICP be enough? I would expect they also require an "BTW verklaring" (VAT declaration) from Dutch customs. This is a formal and legal document which states that VAT was paid in the Netherlands.

Wel I work a lot with yachtregistration compagny, and it isn't a scam..
I've registered more dan 10yachts this year, as a dealer from yachtregistration compagny. And it is true, a ICP for a Dutch sailor is easy to get, at low cost (€50) but for a foreign EU resident, the registration needs more, and indeed a Dutch address.

The fact is that mostly bigger (expensive) yachts register, so the price is quite high to register (€950 for EU residents) which has to be 2-yearly renewal for less money ofcourse.

@Whitemagic:
So you wanna register an old dinghy in the "Kadaster" and let him renew every 2 year?

@TS
just show the invoice at your registration office and tell him that registration in The Netherlands was never needed.

Ahoj. I lived on the Česká-Deutschland border for several years. Enjoyed many trips on the Czech rivers. Floating on a kayak, at times powered by rum. Never seen a police officer near the water, not even on Vodní nádrž Lipno. Are you sure they will shoot you when you don't register the boat?

I wouldnt register a dinghy at all..waste of money and the cost of register compared to the purchase price is out of balance

But in the bigger pricerange register under Dutch law can be helpful

Hi There,

Unfortunately times have changed a bit on this... now they are a frequent presence and packed with a kit of red tape!

I have been asking around and it seems that the ICP will be enough for me, as the Czech law states that if the boat has (any) registration in another EU country, it is automatically exempt from Czech registration. So I will do the ICP and renew it every 2 years... still cheaper than here, where boaters have to pay a tax annually :ohmy: "Oh... the luxury of boat ownwership" :blink:

Does anybody have any references on a company called "zeeenwater.nl"? Apparently they charge a fair price!

Thanks a lot!

I just want to add something , that may (or may nor) be of any help

"ICP aanvragen

Het Internationaal Certificaat Pleziervaartuigen (ICP) is een officieus eigendomsbewijs dat in de praktijk uitstekend voldoet. In vrijwel heel Europa wordt het ICP geaccepteerd als identiteitsbewijs van de boot."

translation "

The IPC is an UN-OFFICIAL document that proves to be helpful as a certificate of ownership in most cases within most of the EU

now you can read into this what you want but its an unofficial document that may (or may not) be accepted in some/most places within the EU

This is not an official ownership doc of any kind , as the dutch government does not have any requirement do officially register a yacht (same as the brits I may add) so it may work for you , or it may not work for you

tread with caution , you gets what you pay for

Until the start of this year, this was possible at the automobile-club ANWB. On there website, the ANWB now points to the Watersporters website. Who in turn points to there own webshop

According to information found on named websites, you need:
A copy of your passport or ID.
AND
A copy of proof of ownership, being one of the following:
- purchase-agreement
- proof of registration at RDW
- proof of registration at the registry
- insurance policy and proof of payment of the insurance.

Cost 27,50 euro

However, since you don't have the Nederlandse nationality, nor have lived in Nederland for at least five years, the application needs to be done by a broker, and that's where zeeenwater kicks in. I fail to find the price for there service on there site, for me that would be a no-go.

By the way, an ICP is not an official document, it has no legal value. It's just a paper that is known to do the trick in several cases.

Hallo there,

It is actually quite simple. "Registration Certificate RDW" was already mentioned in this discussion. People do not seem to know that you can officially "overwrite" this registration to a Czech resident (I repeat: no Dutch address required). Means you walk to a post office (with an RDW desk, most have them), both the current owner and the new, with your respective IDs and for some symbolic cash (sure compared to those "registration" companies) you are done. This is an official information RDW can give you, plus this is exactly what I have done with my father last year. As a Czech (formerly) living in the Netherlands I bought a boat and registered it on my name. Couple of month later my father came to NL, we went to the RDW desk and now he has an official Dutch registration of his boat (on his Czech address), with the hull registration numbers and all. As this is an official (in one of the) EU (countries) registration, it is fully official in Czech Republic too.

Sloppy.

Isnt the RDW registration only valid voor fast boats >20kph ? , the only RDW registration I know is "registratiebewijs snelle boten"

example :(not mine)

With a large enough engine a UFO can go more than 20 km/h :whistle:
The problem for the topicstarter is that you need to go to a RDW Desk in The Netherlands in person.

True, almost any (motor) boat can fit the "snelle motorboot" definition. You have to come physically to NL though, there is no other way, as RDW explicitly told me.

don't have to , you can own a fast boat without having a vaarbewijs , you can be the owner and not be the skipper/captain (who does need a vaarbewijs)
