Hi Ed,
I have looked into the suggestion of using a diesel system cleaner to address the black smoke and I don't feel for this test. I'll explain why.
The Yanmar YSB8 starts and runs well, but it produces some black smoke at higher RPM. There are several possible causes for this, including:
1 deposits in the injector
2 an incorrectly adjusted injector
3 fuel/ injection adjustment
4 valve adjustment or timing
and, less likely,
5 internal engine wear or a compression problem.
A diesel system cleaner could potentially help, but only if the black smoke is caused by deposits affecting the injector or its spray pattern. However, it is not a diagnostic test for the condition of the engine.
There are therefore several possible outcomes:
1 The smoke decreases – this could indicate that deposits affecting the injector were a factor.
2 Nothing changes – this would only indicate that the cleaner has not solved the problem; it does not mean that the engine has a major problem. The cause could simply be elsewhere on the list above.
3 The smoke changes in another way – this also would not tell that there is a serious engine problem.
Given that the engine starts and runs well (I've tested it for hours this summer, also at sea and with heavy weather), I have no reason to assume that there is a serious internal engine problem. I would therefore prefer not to use the cleaner as a test before the sale. If you are interested in the boat, you are of course welcome to have the engine inspected by a qualified mechanic.
I hope you understand that I thus don't want to do this additive test as a kind of pass/fail test for the engine. We can ofcourse make an test trip, but not for 1,5 or 2hrs, just an ordinary test-trip instead.
I hope you'll understand my thoughts and please let me know if you still want to come over. Kind regards, Paulien
