Summary of recommendations for World Sailing
An AIS transponder should be mandatory equipment as of OSR Cat 3.
A grab bag with essential safety equipment should be mentioned more explicitly as mandatory equipment for monohulls.
It should no longer be allowed to store the life raft inside the boat for boats built before June 2001.
Summary of recommendations for Wind en Watersport Vlaanderen
Boat owners should be motivated to install an AIS transponder as general safety equipment even when OSR rules don’t make this mandatory.
Boat owners and sailors should be informed about and motivated to effectively use all the recommended safety communication equipment (portable VHF, EPIRB, PLB, AIS MOB), and the associated use of a grab bag.
Sailors should be motivated to always wear their life jacket.
Race organisers should make the wearing of life jackets mandatory during the night in all circumstances, and during the day when foul weather sail clothes are worn.
Race organisers should require a crew list with names, nationalities, contact details, and names and phone numbers of next of kin.
Organising clubs should be supported to make emergency plans for major accidents.
